IS THE GROWING INFLUENCE OF AMERICA ALWAYS POSITIVE?

IS THE GROWING INFLUENCE OF AMERICA ALWAYS POSITIVE?

Google, Apple, Coca Cola, Ford…many of us in the UK are influenced by all things American. There is talk of the NFL setting up a franchised American football team based in London. Halloween has taken off in this country and consumer spending on the ghoulish evening is increasing year on year. On the whole, this has to be positive. Consumers are being provided with more choices; a new sport to compete with our British traditions of soccer, rugby union and cricket, as well as a new event to compete with the traditional Bonfire Night celebration.

Yesterday’s shopping madness however, otherwise known as Black Friday, is different. Imported from the US, this all American tradition marks the start of the Xmas shopping rush. American stores have made the day a festive event with huge discounts to create excitement and generate business. It has had its problems – in Long Island in 2008 a Walmart worker died after being crushed by frenzied customers. As shoppers fought over bargains and police were called to restore order yesterday, we asked is this violence an American influence that we can do without?. Maybe we should just wait for the post Xmas sales to slash prices. It usually runs peacefully in a very British way!.
