A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MARKETING STUDENT

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MARKETING STUDENT

I am currently studying for an undergraduate degree in Business with Marketing at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

Upon leaving sixth form, many students go onto university to study academic subjects such as History, Maths, Geography and Physics, following their passion. Passionate about business however, I chose a business related degree, Business with Marketing …….. relevant for a career in this area.

Before I started this part of my education in September 2011, I was in the dark, not knowing what to expect from university. I had heard the teaching style was very different from that of school! I was also slightly apprehensive that I would be cooking all my own meals, and tidying up after myself!

The Studying…

The degree has being tailored to develop a number of key skills that employers deem desirable, with the modules varying across a number of key business functions, marketing being the main focus obviously.

I have found the degree massively relevant to current business trends, with much of the theory we have learnt being easily applicable to current methods adopted by major multinationals down to sole traders.

The Placement

As part of my degree, I chose to undertake a years paid work as part of an industrial placement year, comprising the sandwich degree. I worked as a Marketing Assistant for an IT company, where I worked on the companies marketing efforts, strategy and introduction and marketing of its new software product. I was required to write a placement portfolio, discussing my personal development, skills and competencies, as well as areas of improvement. In recognition of this I was awarded an external qualification, the LCGI.

The Relevance

Overall, I think that doing a Business with Marketing Degree is very relevant as it provides the necessary building blocks required to develop essential skills and knowledge in the discipline.

The cooking and tidying up

mmm…
