10 QUESTIONS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP ONTO THE SOCIAL MEDIA LADDER

10 QUESTIONS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP ONTO THE SOCIAL MEDIA LADDER

Small companies are increasingly adopting social media for marketing purposes, although numbers reported on the actual proportion of small businesses deploying some form of social media are contradictory. There doesn’t appear to be definitive statistics available, understandable given the plethora of different types and sizes of small businesses.

There are a couple of consistent trends that are worth highlighting. The larger the organisation, the more likely they are to have commenced their content strategy. Growth in the number of socially active SME’s is expected to continue over the next two years, although there are still many in this group who have yet to ‘kick start’ any social media programme.

I was recently talking to a small business owner about this and was hearing three things:

· He recognised there was a lot of noise being created through social media

· Everyone, including his competition now seemed to be a publisher

· and…what could he do about it, how could he start.

As he mulled over making this move to become an online publisher with the aim to increase his business, I suggested 10 questions for him to consider.

1 How will becoming a publisher help achieve your business goals?

2 Who is your audience?

3 What do they need and want?

4 What can you provide that your audience will value?

5 What are the content of the messages going to be?

6 How can you incorporate your own brand style into what you do?

7 How can you make what you do different to the competition?

8 How will you reach the audience and encourage participation?

9 How can you develop engagement and translate this into business?

10 What resource do you need to make it happen and what would you like to learn?

For small and medium size businesses wanting to make that transition onto the first steps of the social media ladder, answering these questions, or similar ones, can be a useful first step towards getting started.
